I play chess properly, which for me means thinking in lines: if I play this, they play that, and then what. Just for the game. Cards too.

Nothing hidden
In chess everything is on the board, so when you lose, you missed something. You learn to check what their last move threatens before getting excited about your own plan.

The word zugzwang
It's the position where every move makes things worse, and you'd love to pass, but the rules say you can't. Learning to see it coming is a big part of getting better.

Cards are the opposite
You never see everything, so you can play well and still lose. What you're really managing is the odds and the other players, and a good hand guarantees nothing.
A bug in my code is chess. Whether a product catches on is cards.
