Volleyball was my team sport. I played competitively for my school. The school ran the tournaments, and we turned up to win them.

Before the ball arrives
Most of the game happens before the ball gets to you. You watch the setter's hands and the hitter's shoulders and guess where it's going. If you wait until you can see it clearly, you're late.

Depending on people
In the pool it's just you. On a court, everyone covers each other's gaps, calls the ball out loud, and trusts the person next to them to be exactly where they said.

The block
A good block changes a match more than a normal point does. If their best hitter gets stuffed twice, they start hitting safer, and the whole game tilts your way.
I still check where everyone is before I move.
